Following 40 years of traditional Fish & Chips at Trenchers of Whitby, winner of the UK’s Best Fish & Chip Restaurant for 2026 & 2019 as part of the National Fish and Chip Awards, we are proud to bring this institution to Whitley Bay.

Offering friendly service with a smile, Trenchers is a place the whole family will love. The restaurant notably enjoys a special spot directly underneath the dome, with a pianist playing on selected days.

Every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday evening, our spectacular pianist, Mike Waller, will be playing on the grand piano from 6pm.

Our menu includes Fish & Chips, Vegetarian options, burgers, Thai green curry and wings. Be sure to check our specials for the catch of the day and have a look at our exceptional offers – we have a Kids Eat Free and Trenchers Afternoon ‘Chippy Tea’ deal that are not to be missed.

Trenchers Takeaway

We have a separate takeaway fish and chip shop which is situated on the beach-side of the building, close to the ramp down to the beach.

Our takeaway offers traditional and delicious fish and chips, amongst lots of other chippy favourites just waiting to be picked up and enjoyed. We have a number of kid’s meals, as well as meat and vegan options, too. There really is something for everyone.

Click & Collect Service

We have made it as easy as possible for you to order your favourite Trenchers dishes to takeaway. At the click of a button, you can order a collection using our ‘Click & Collect’ service.

Gluten-Free & Vegan

The range in the restaurant is home to gluten-free fryer, meaning that many of our dishes can be made gluten-free and have been marked on our menu. We also have a vegan fryer. Fried gluten-free and vegan options are not available from the seafront takeaway, but customers can enjoy gluten-free and vegan fried dishes when using Click & Collect. Please add a note to your booking.

We are incredibly proud to have placed 3rd in the Fish & Chip Restaurant of the Year category at the 2025 National Fish & Chip Restaurant Awards, adding to our achievement of being crowned Best Fish & Chip Restaurant of the Year in 2020.

In 2026 & 2024, we were further recognised in the prestigious Fry Awards, earning a place among the Top 10 Best Fish & Chip Restaurants in the UK, as well as being listed in the Top 50 Best Fish & Chip Takeaways in the UK.
